Whether you like it or not!

MAY 2024

UPDATED 5/27/2024

Welcome to late May! Although sun is in the forecast, be prepared for all weather conditions as June approaches. The snow storms last week have accumulated in the mountains, so with temperatures reaching the high 70s in the upcoming weeks runoff will be coming back with a vengeance. Currently, the flows at Kirby are hovering around that 1420 cfs mark. Cabin Creek and Beaver creek are starting to blow out. The water at Raynolds looked great this morning and the water closer to town is green. As the water level rises, be sure to be cognizant of the flows and check the USGS gauges. DO NOT try to run a raft or a drift boat between Lyons and Palisades when flows exceed 1700 cfs at the Kirby gauge, and if any questions arise give us a call here at the shop and we will be more than happy to help!

As far as bugs go, you might be able to get some fish looking up at some caddis or BWO’s, but I would recommend getting aquatic. The nymph and streamer game will produce the best outcomes with the water clarity declining. Pat’s Rubber legs, worms, and large nymphs are your best bet; however, chucking those olive, yellow, or black Peanut Envy’s, Dungeons, or Silk Kitties could provide some impressive fish.

As always our shop in downtown Ennis is stocked to the brim with flies so don't be afraid to swing by and check them out for yourself. Also feel free to swing by the shop for a more in-depth and up to date fishing report or general fishing advice. Just a reminder as well it is now barbless hooks only from Varney bridge to the Lake so pinch those barbs. Enjoy the warm weather this weekend and be safe out there!
